The concept of a secondary belt drive system for supercharged C5 and C6 Corvettes is nothing new; by isolating the supercharger belt to a short 8 or 10-rib belt driven directly from the harmonic balancer, it allows for maximum belt wrap and help eliminate belt slip for higher power applications. Here at East Coast Supercharging, we work on more late-model Corvettes than any other shop in the world outside of GM, and we have installed all the secondary systems currently in the market and they have some shortcomings we felt needed to be addressed.
Introducing the new East Coast Supercharging Direct Drive Belt System™. Using our proprietary Cog Drive design, we can efficiently transfer power from the harmonic balancer to the accessory drive using the latest in cog belt technology from our partners at Gates® with their Poly Chain® GT® Carbon™ reinforced polyurethane cog belts. This eliminates ALL belt slip from the secondary belt drive!
Our design is different than all other secondary belt systems currently on the market, which rely on either the AC belt or an individual small 4-rib belt to drive the secondary drive pulley and relies solely on the tension and friction of the 4-rib belt to drive all your accessories. We have seen time and time again that the 4-rib belts end up slipping possibly losing alternator voltage at higher RPMs or affecting the power steering at slower speeds and causing a loud belt squeal. We found the 4-rib belt systems to be prone to stretching and slip thus needing constant maintenance or replacement.
We do away with that main problem by using a proven method of power transmission, the COG BELT! Timing belts, oil pumps, superchargers, alternators and more have been driven by a type of cog drive to great success. Some of the benefits of these Gates® cog belts are:
- Durable polyurethane construction resists chemicals, oil, pollutants and abrasion.
- Robust carbon tensile cord combines minimal stretch with extraordinary strength and load carrying capacity.
- Gates curvilinear tooth profile provides high shear strength and improved load carrying capacity.
- Nylon tooth facing reduces friction and eliminates the need for lubrication.
- Equivalent capacity to roller chain drives in the same width that offer a maintenance-free, clean solution with no lubrication or re-tensioning required.
For the accessory belt, we are using a short GATES® Racing Belts™ 6-Rib belt to drive the power steering and alternator pulleys and is tensioned using a factory GM tensioner providing proper constant tension on the accessory belt just like the OEM design.
Our kits will be available for both 8- and 10-rib applications and include a proprietary Innovators West® SFI Balancer that has been made to our specs and allow for the supercharger belt and AC belts to be left alone and unaffected in their operation making this the most reliable secondary drive system in the market. Already have an Innovators west 8- or 10-rib balancers? No problem! You can send it in to us, and we can modify it to work with our kit.
This kit is 100% designed, developed and manufactured in-house using state of the art CAD and CNC Machining techniques and thoroughly tested on our own vehicles before being released to the public. This system is at home on either the street or race track and is compatible with ALL Centrifugal style supercharger systems on the market. We use U.S. sourced 6061 aluminum for all brackets and spacers along with the same heavy duty sealed double bearings on the cog pulley assembly as we do on our industry leading supercharger systems.
We provide everything needed for installation except for the supercharger belt due to the very specific nature of each application. The only modification needed is to the factory alternator bracket, but it is made easy with our supplied instructions or you can simply order the optional modified bracket when you place your order.
